Peter Holt Hatch papers, 1843-1897.

Peter Holt Hatch was a blacksmith on whaling ships who settled in Oregon with his wife and child in 1843. He established a home in Oregon City where he worked as a carpenter and road builder. He relocated to Salem in 1862 and operated a house moving business until his death in 1898. This collection includes weather and daily diaries (1874-1897) and account books (1866-1896, 1882-1884, 1892-1893). Also contained is a letter from Hawaii by Charlotte Colcord Hatch (Hatch's first wife) to her brother, David Colcord, April 9, 1843; and a letter from Peter Hatch proposing marriage to Miss Sarah Cornelia Locey, December 13, 1846 (they married in 1847). Miscellaneous papers include a deed from Absolom F. Hedges, genealogical data, correspondence, a scrapbook of Edwin Thomas Hatch, and ephemera, some of which is related to other Hatch family members, plus funeral eulogies for Sarah Locey Hatch and Peter Hatch.

Peter Holt Hatch was born in 1810 in Parsonfield, Maine. Originally trained as a blacksmith, he joined a whaling expedition and travelled to the Hawaiian Islands, where he worked for a time as a missionary. In 1843 he came to Oregon with his first wife, Charlotte Colcord Hatch, and his son David, settling at first in Oregon City.
